The storage tank is the heart of any propane-powered Delmarva home. The question is, how big should that heart be? Let’s take a look at some propane tank sizing basics to find out.

Propane tank sizing 101

A properly installed and maintained propane tank can last for decades – so it pays to take the time to make sure you get the right tool for the job.

Propane tanks come in a number of sizes for residential use, with aboveground models ranging from small 100 pound vertical propane cylinders to power smaller appliances to 1000 gallon horizontal tanks for large homes and some commercial applications (underground tanks can be even larger).

Some common propane tank sizes are:

  • 100 pound (holds about 25 gallons of propane when full) – Typically used to power smaller appliances such as home fireplaces, cooking ranges, dryers, and barbecues; also used in some small temporary heat applications.
  • 420 pound (holds about 96 gallons of propane when filled to 80 percent) – Used for home and water heating, plus dryers, fireplaces, generators, and pool heat.
  • 500 gallon (holds about 400 gallons of propane when filled to 80 percent) – Used to heat houses that range from 2,500 to 4,500 square feet. Also used in medium-duty heating, commercial cooking, dry cleaning, crop drying and temporary heating applications.
  • 1000 gallon (holds about 800 gallons of propane when filled to 80 percent) – Commonly used in larger home systems in houses ranging from 4,500 square feet and up. Also used for commercial heating, commercial cooking, dry cleaning, crop drying and temporary heating.
