Earth Day happens on April 22, and this year’s Earth Day is a big milestone because it’s the golden (50th!) anniversary of the holiday itself!
Things were different back in 1970, when the first Earth Day was observed. We were coming off two ecological disasters which opened a lot of eyes to the perils we were facing due to environmental damage and pollution: the Santa Barbara oil spill, where close to 100,000 barrels of crude oil spilled into the Santa Barbara channel, and the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland catching on fire thanks to a combination of an oil slick and decades of pollution.
There have been many changes since the first Earth Day. Leaded gasoline is no longer used in vehicles. Our home heating and cooling equipment, and appliances, are much more energy-efficient. We recycle exponentially more. But, a threat to the planet remains in the form of climate change. That has many of us wanting to do more to prevent further damage.
One thing you can easily do is use propane in your Delmarva home!
We’ll give you three reasons why propane, named as an alternative fuel in both the 1990 update of the Clean Air Act and the 1992 National Energy Policy, is the clear winner when it comes to protecting the planet while keeping your home safe and comfortable.
Propane combustion produces less than half of the greenhouse gas emissions made by electricity to produce the same amount of energy. Propane also contains less carbon than other fossil fuels like heating oil, gasoline, diesel, kerosene and ethanol!
By using less energy, your home is responsible for fewer greenhouse gas emissions. If you like using less energy you’ll love propane! Appliances run on propane usually use a great deal less energy than similar electric appliances. For instance, a propane tankless water heater can save you up to 50% on energy costs compared with a similar water heater that’s powered by electricity.
Unlike crude oil, propane is nontoxic and doesn’t spill, pool or leave a residue in the rare event of a propane leak. It also won’t harm water, soil or air.
